Biomorphic Sculpture

Hi there!
This assignment was a whirlwind of emotions – especially concerning the chiseling of the form and the application of the plaster. The part of the process I enjoyed most was the implementation of texture in the forms of jewelry beads and gold leaf. I am also pleased with the addition of the painted rebar tie wire, although I do wish I would have added one or two more strings of wire. I believe the color palette complements the form well; however, I am upset that I decided to eliminate deep violet from the equation. I believe it would have complemented the gold accents and added more depth and richness to the inner textured elements.
Overall, I am pleased with the finished product – despite my adversity with the plaster. I definitely learned several valuable lessons within this process, and I hope to explore various concepts with plaster in the future.

  1. I love the colors you use in all your designs. I love the way this looks! It seems like it's just one side that designed, then you look at another face, and it's still interesting instead of flat. I think you nailed this assignment!

  2. This is stunning Gracie! Your ability amazes me! The gold matched with the blueish green is gorgeous. The three gold bars that go through the sculpture is such a unique and interesting touch. Overall this sculpture is extremely successful.

  3. Gracie, your work is always above and beyond! Keep that up, sister!

The form, the texture, the colors, the added elements.. it all works so well! I am obsessed with the relationship between the organic form and the very tight, thin, linear lines of the rebar wire! The opposites really compliment each other well!

your sculpture is very successful! the form has a sense of abstract yet natural, its really great! however i enjoyed the gold leaf but i cant quite tell what the white milky stuff is. is it glue? lol overall your use of color and technique are top notch as always.

    1. Thank you, Laura! The milky white stuff is the gold leaf adhesive size that never turned tacky and transparent.

  6. Your sculpture has great movement and great color. The gold works so well with the green and the way the gold is placed is so thoughtful.

  7. Hey Gracie, you did get the plaster figured out! I think the texture you chose works really well- it's intentional, very strategically employed, and strong in contrast to the smoother, more sinuous nature of the rest of the form. With the green paint, is has a very mossy or barnacle like quality- very organic. I'm interested in the little bit of blue you used- I think it's a nice subtle variation of tone, I think it could have been used a little bit more. The gold leaf is almost a texture as well. It was a good choice-effective visually- I think some areas of the gold are very successful at amplifying the movement of the object, and others seem less deliberate- more like a space fill than a device to compel movement. The wires worked out great! Some weirdness with the plaster around one- but very Barbara Hepworth. The sharp contrast in line weight and density is really interesting.
